How can you reduce the noise of machines and devices?

When designing and manufacturing machines and devices, noise reduction is usually not at the top of the priority list. Nevertheless, applying acoustic material can offer significant benefits: it improves product quality and increases user comfort. Moreover, it can help in meeting noise regulations.

In which market segments do acoustic materials contribute to quieter machines and devices?

Acoustic materials are suitable for various applications in machinery and equipment construction, for example in:

    • HVAC equipment such as air conditioners, heat pumps, mechanical ventilation systems, and cooling installations.
    • Industrial machinery such as compressors, generators, pumps, drives, and production lines.
    • Household appliances such as washing machines, dryers, extractor hoods, refrigerators and freezers, and vacuum cleaners.
    • Medical equipment, including MRI scanners and X-ray machines, where silent operation is crucial.

Integrating acoustic materials into the design contributes to quieter machines.

What materials do I need to reduce the noise of machines and devices?

The choice of the right material depends on whether you want to absorb sound, insulate, or dampen vibrations.

    Sound-absorbing material

The absorption of sound and the reduction of reflections within enclosures or housings of machines. The sound absorption capacity of a material is expressed by the absorption coefficient, which can be found for each frequency range on the product pages.

    Soundproofing material

Reducing sound transmission between machine parts or to the environment. For example, by adding extra mass.

    Vibration damping material

Dampening unwanted vibrations that cause a machine or device to emit sound by placing it on vibration-damping material.

In addition to the soundproofing properties, the choice of material is also crucial, depending on the circumstances:

    • Oil- and moisture-resistant: suitable for machines where oil splashes may occur.
      Examples: EASYfoam Acousticab, EASYfoam PU.
    • Fire-safe: for applications with high requirements regarding fire safety.
Example: EASYfoam FireSeal (EN 13501, class B-s1, d0).
    • Water-resistant: suitable for outdoor setups or humid environments.
      Example: EASYwhisper
